As we read these biblical accounts, we may be tempted to view these events as merely tragic stories recorded in a book—just another sad story in a novel or tall tale.

This would probably be true if the Bible contained only the good in people and ignored their failures. Instead, it presents both the virtues and flaws of humanity, along with a God who expresses profound love for His creation while also responding with righteous judgment toward sin and disobedience. At one moment, we see His unfailing love, mercy, and patience; at another, we see His disapproval of evil and the serious consequences that follow rebellion against Him.

This apparent fluctuation in God's response to human behavior can also be viewed as evidence of the Bible's authenticity. The Bible portrays people as they truly are—capable of great faith and great failure—and it presents the consequences of both. Rather than idealizing human nature, Scripture honestly records humanity's strengths, weaknesses, obedience, rebellion, triumphs, and shortcomings. This realism is one reason many find the Bible credible and relatable.

Biblical accounts are not merely stories recorded in a book. They describe historical events and real experiences that people endured and overcame in order to see better days. Many of these accounts are also connected to people, places, and events that have been studied by historians and archaeologists.

<a class="image-link are not confined to the ancient world. Similar hardships still occur today. Although the media may not regularly report stories of people surviving fiery ordeals or the ongoing reality of modern slavery in various parts of the world, the absence of coverage does not mean such events do not exist. Human suffering, injustice, perseverance, and deliverance remain realities of life, just as they were in biblical times.

If you can remove the scales from your eyes and look deeper, you will see that these were real people facing what appeared to be impossible odds. Yet instead of allowing fear to rule them during their greatest challenges, they chose to place their trust in the power of God.

Instead of bowing down to fear and giving it authority over their lives, they chose to bow down to God and worship their Creator. They fixed their eyes on Him rather than on their circumstances, trusting that He was greater than the challenges before them.

They fixed their eyes on God rather than becoming consumed by the fear of their circumstances. By focusing on His faithfulness, strength, and ability to deliver, they found the courage to persevere—and ultimately prevailed.

If you’re not just an NPC cycling through programmed routines and you actually have a real life, you’ve probably come face to face with your own “fiery furnace,” experienced betrayal from people you trusted, dealt with plenty of other challenges that life tends to throw at real people, and the host of other evils that life has to offer.

Note: The use of the term “NPC” in the context of social media and the internet refers to individuals who are perceived to lack independent thought, blindly following popular opinions or ideologies without critical thinking or originality.a

It can be easy to get discouraged and feel overwhelmed by fear, brokenness, or grief when those moments hit hard. But when those moments come at you like a mag-lev train, it’s your time to shine. It’s time to show up for yourself like you do for others. It’s time to show that you have what it takes to win in life.

Our Perception Becomes Our Daily Bread

Fear can often get the best of us when we focus on our circumstances. We can become so consumed by fear that the problems we face seem larger than everything else in our lives. Our problems can grow so large in our minds that our perception makes them appear greater than the God of the Bible—the One who created the heavens, the earth, and the entire universe.

t is a well-known principle that whatever you focus on becomes enlarged through the lens of your perspective. The more you fixate on a problem, the more it replays in your mind, and the cycle of fear begins to take hold. As a result, the problem can appear much bigger than it truly is.

Question to Ponder

How often have you thought about a problem so intensely that you dreamed about it, or found yourself thinking about it during a completely unrelated conversation?

Whenever you spend that much time focusing on your circumstances, you’re likely to become distracted—so distracted that you may never begin thinking about how to arrive at a solution. Instead of searching for answers, your mind becomes consumed by the problem itself.

If you're driving and lose focus on the road, it's possible to get into a serious accident. Similarly, when you lose focus on God because of a problem you're facing, fear can begin to suffocate your ability to think clearly and critically. As you lose sight of God and the plans He has for you, you become more vulnerable to moral, emotional, and spiritual missteps. Left unchecked, these missteps can worsen your circumstances and damage the very things you have been working so hard to build.

When you keep your eyes fixed on Jesus, everything works to your advantage.

I like to say, “We eventually eat what we perceive.” It carries a meaning similar to the concept of perception: one person sees the glass as half empty, while another sees it as half full. It also echoes the well-known saying, “Belief kills, and belief cures.”

In other words, the way we perceive a situation often influences how we respond to it. Over time, our thoughts shape our attitudes, our attitudes influence our actions, and our actions help determine the direction of our lives.

We know that if we regularly eat junk food, we are slowly damaging our bodies, and eventually we will come face to face with the consequences of the poor health we have spent years creating. When that moment arrives, we can choose to make better dietary decisions or continue down the same destructive path.

In much the same way, what we repeatedly feed our minds and hearts will eventually produce results. Over time, our thoughts, beliefs, and habits shape the quality and direction of our mental, emotional, spiritual, and even physical health.

Hence, our perception becomes our daily bread. We will eventually see the results of what we have been consistently feeding our minds, believing in our hearts, and acting upon in our daily lives.

Anxiety, heart attacks, strokes, and many other preventable health conditions often do not occur overnight. They can develop over time as a result of prolonged stress, unhealthy habits, and other contributing factors. As we continually “feed on” fear and consume anxious thoughts, we can lead our minds and bodies down a harmful path that negatively affects our overall well-being and may ultimately lead us down a deadly, irreversible path.

It is when we focus on, feed on, and adopt fear-based thinking that the adversary seeks to promote that we begin to believe the bad outweighs the good.

Life has so much good to offer that if you keep your eyes and faith fixed on Jesus, you will see that the good in life always overshadows the bad. After an apple seed is planted, it typically takes about 5 to 10 years for an apple tree to mature and begin producing fruit.

Imagine This: apples have become a rare commodity. You invest your last few dollars into apple seeds, carefully plant them, and wait years—decade after decade—expecting a harvest that could change everything for you.

But when the time finally comes, the tree doesn’t produce apples at all. Instead, it yields oranges—something common, abundant, and not what you sacrificed so much to obtain.

Question to Ponder

How would that outcome make you feel?

This is one of the most significant reasons for using the solution points to help break away from fear-based thinking. You want things to get better and stay that way, but that will not happen when fear becomes your guiding influence.

Although you may not desire or foresee the negative results fear will eventually produce, whatever you consistently feed your mind will ultimately become your daily bread.

Just like anger, attraction, and excitement are feelings, fear is also a feeling. And just as we must regulate and manage emotions such as excitement, anger, and disappointment, we must also learn to regulate and manage fear.

Don’t Act in Fear

Act in Wisdom by Focusing on God

Share

Fear should never be so dominant in your life that it compels you to move in a certain direction—unless, of course, you are in a true fight-or-flight situation. Outside of critical moments that require immediate response, fear should not be allowed to coerce you into making decisions that could affect your life for years to come.

As we invest our energy, time, and attention in repeatedly analyzing why something happened, how it happened, and related details, these reflections begin to shape our daily thought patterns. Over time, they become embedded in our long-term memory and form part of what we mentally “consume” each day—eventually becoming our daily bread.

While it is not always wise to completely forget painful experiences, it is far more beneficial to intentionally recall and dwell on moments of growth, triumph, and victory. This balanced focus helps shape a healthier mindset and supports long-term emotional and mental stability. The more you feed your mind with intentional, triumphant thoughts, the more your mind produces triumphant results.

If you sow fear by giving in to ungodly and unwise emotions, you will live from one tragedy to the next. However, when you focus on God, you will live from one victory to the next.

We should not practice responding to fear in ways that jeopardize our relationships, character, integrity, or other areas of life that shape our mental state and well-being, as well as the well-being of those we care about. We cannot act on every impulse of anger, excitement, or other heightened emotions.

This does not mean we should suppress having a vibrant, expressive, and engaging personality. However, it does mean we should not behave impulsively or allow emotions to pull us away from wisdom. Nor should we let moments of emotional intensity dictate our decision-making.

Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths. Proverbs 3:5-6 KJV

You may have been victimized or taken advantage of. It is especially difficult to overcome deeply rooted hurt. However, rising above those wounds creates victors rather than victims.

Working with God through this pain and trusting Jesus with your heart can cultivate within you a spirit of triumph instead of tragedy. It then becomes your choice which narrative you will rehearse in your mind repeatedly—the story of defeat or the story of victory.

It is always best to focus on being a victor rather than a victim. This is one reason Scripture encourages us not to remain bound to the past but to look forward with expectation. As it says, “Do not remember the former things, nor consider the things of old. Behold, I am doing a new thing” (Isaiah 43:18-19, AMP).

For I know the thoughts that I think toward you,” says Yahweh, “thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you hope and a future. Jeremiah 29:11 WMB

If we want to be triumphant victors, we must begin planting those seeds today by rehearsing our victories—both past and present—and by envisioning the victories we hope to achieve in the future.

By consistently focusing on God’s faithfulness, past successes, and future possibilities, we cultivate a mindset that is prepared for victory rather than defeat.

We cannot plant apple seeds and expect to harvest oranges. If we are led by our emotions, we will often find ourselves moving from one failure to the next, one tragedy to the next, and one poor decision to another.

Every time we allow anger, fear, bitterness, or other unchecked emotions to dictate our actions, we risk sowing the very seeds that produce the outcomes we dislike. When we speak harsh words without considering how they affect others, we can unintentionally recreate the pain, conflict, and heartache we are trying to escape.

It is safe to say that we reap what we sow. Therefore, if we desire peace, wisdom, victory, and healthy relationships, we must intentionally plant those seeds in our thoughts, words, and actions.

Tough It is safe to say that we reap what we sow.

Likewise, we cannot act on every impulse of fear. If we want to respond to fear appropriately, we must consistently choose not to allow fear to dictate our decision-making process.

This is not a one-time decision or a “set it and forget it” exercise. Focusing on fear reproduces our suffering, while focusing on Jesus brings forth our best life.

The most important thing you must do when deciding to reject fearful thoughts is to take the Word of God seriously. What does God say about fear?

For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind. 2 Timothy 1:7 NKJV

Don’t be carried away by fear. While it may be possible to recover from fear-based decisions, some consequences may take years to overcome, especially when those decisions have been made over a long period of time.

If you have spent years making fear-based choices, it may also take time to retrain your mind so that wise and godly decisions become part of your mental “autopilot” system.

Never lose focus on God, the author and finisher of your faith and story. The sooner you begin to take action to retrain your mind away from fear-based decisions, the sooner your life can begin to improve.

Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God. Hebrews 12:2 KJV

When you focus on Jesus, you may still make mistakes as you learn to trust Him, but you will not lose your way.

Your focus determines the direction of the days ahead. If you make decisions rooted in fear, you will find yourself living within the confines of fear’s bondage, much like someone who is physically incarcerated, though the walls are internal rather than visible.

If you choose to make decisions grounded in wisdom instead of fear, you position yourself to experience the better days you have been sowing into all along.

Keep a list of Bible verses handy and reread them when you are tempted to make fear-based decisions.

When you feel fearful, remember these are the things God wants you to know. Choose two that speak to you personally. You can save them in your phone as an ⏱ alarm or 🗓️ calendar reminder and recite them when you are tempted to make fear-based decisions, or at a set time during the day (the latter is preferable).

For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind. 2 Timothy 1:7 NKJV

For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God. But he who fears has not been made perfect in love. 1 John 4:18

And Moses said to the people, 'Do not fear; for God has come to test you, and that His fear may be before you, so that you may not sin.' Exodus 20:20

We tend to believe the things we say most often, so it is important to add language to your vocabulary that resists impulsively reacting to fearful emotions.

You can choose to believe this truth and walk with Jesus, or remain weighed down by fear and miss the fullness of life He offers. While God is not a genie and never claims to be one, if you carried that same boldness and expectancy in prayer, asking God for anything you can imagine, why wouldn’t you?

🧭In movies, a genie carelessly gives people whatever they want, regardless of the destruction it may cause. God, however, intends to give us His very best once we are disciplined and ready to receive it.

Have you thought about things you wish you could change in the past or present? The past is behind us and cannot be changed. Tomorrow has not yet come, so ask yourself, “Why haven’t I started planning today to ensure I do not repeat the same mistakes in the future?”

Do you have an idea for a business, ministry, or a way to enjoy life more but haven’t started yet? Sometimes we deny our fear of the unknown, but if we truly have no fear, why not begin the journey?

Question to Ponder

Are you listening to the voice of faith or the voice of fear?

When fear becomes louder than the voice of God, it pulls us away from faith—and whatever is not of faith is sin (Romans 14:23). Scripture consistently teaches that faith and fear do not operate in agreement. In fact, fear stands in direct opposition to faith.

Fear becomes a destructive sin when we choose to hold onto it instead of trusting in the power of God and allowing Him to guide our decisions.

Subscribe now

We are not called by God to be led by our emotions (fear, torment, pain, and the like); we are called to be led by Christ.

We were designed by God to feel fear when necessary in order to escape danger. However, Scripture repeatedly teaches that we are not built to live under fear that controls our decisions and charts the course of our lives. We are not to obey fear or make fear-based decisions; our allegiance is to God, and our calling is to obey Him.

Here are Bible verses that specifically tell us that misplaced fear—fear in response to our circumstances—is not of God. We are called to fear God Himself, not our circumstances.

Isaiah 8:12-13 WMB
“…Don’t fear what they fear, neither be afraid. Sanctify Yahweh of Armies himself; let him be your fear, and let him be your dread.”

Proverbs 29:25 WMB
“The fear of man brings a snare, but whoever puts his trust in Yahweh is kept safe.”

Isaiah 41:10 WMB
“Don’t you be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you. Yes, I will help you. Yes, I will uphold you with the right hand of my righteousness.”

Luke 12:32 WMB
“Don’t be afraid, little flock, for it is your Father’s good pleasure to give you the Kingdom.”

Exodus 20:18-20 WMB
“All the people perceived the thunderings, the lightnings, the sound of the shofar, and the mountain smoking. When the people saw it, they trembled and stood far away. They said to Moses, ‘Speak with us yourself, and we will listen; but don’t let God speak with us, lest we die.’ Moses said to the people, ‘Don’t be afraid, for God has come to test you, and that his fear may be before you, that you won’t sin.’”

The Devastation

One of the greatest regrets that most people have in their later years is their inability to go after what they believed was truly possible. Are you that person?

Are you choosing to live in faith and confidence, knowing that God can do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think? Or are you choosing to accumulate the devastation of regret, saving it for your later years?

Now to him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us, to him be the glory in the assembly and in Messiah Yeshua to all generations forever and ever. Amen. Ephesians 3:20-21 WMB

If you’re denying yourself the opportunity to live the life your heart longs for, it is highly likely that you're operating under a spirit of fear. If you are not operating under the spirit of fear, what’s stopping you from getting started?

Fear presents itself in many forms: fear of failure, fear of the opinions of others, fear of lacking resources, uncertainty about the future, and more. While we do not deny reality or the challenges we face, we also acknowledge the power of the Creator of the universe.

Often, when we give reasons for not moving forward, what is actually happening in our hearts is a lack of confidence in God—His ability to hear our prayers, provide for our needs, and make a way for us to accomplish what He has placed in us.

Question to Ponder

Is the God who created the universe unable to provide a solution to your obstacles?

Isaiah 50:2 (KJV)
“… Is my hand shortened at all, that it cannot redeem? or have I no power to deliver? behold, at my rebuke I dry up the sea, I make the rivers a wilderness…”

Isaiah 59:1 (KJV)
“Behold, the LORD’s hand is not shortened, that it cannot save; neither his ear heavy, that it cannot hear.”

The fear we experience is real and should not be dismissed. However, while our fears may be understandable, they are not a sufficient reason to stay in mediocrity.

For God didn’t give us a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and self-control. 2 Timothy 1:7 WMB

Scripture tells us that God has not given us a spirit of fear, so the question becomes: where is the fear of starting your journey coming from? One thing we can be certain of is that the fear you are experiencing does not come from God.

What is holding you back from walking in the life Christ died to give you? Why have you not begun putting pen to paper and asking God to lead you—not only to succeed in life, but to become the solution to the problem He created you to address?

The Decisions That Shaped Our Past

The circumstances we are facing today are a summation of our decisions—great, good, bad, and terrible. Knowing this, it is up to us to make decisions that will produce the results we desire. If we have spent the past several years living in fear, it may take months or even years to reject that fear and develop a heart of courage.

If you choose to remain in the past and continue yielding to fear, that is a decision you can make. But when you are tempted to blame others or even God for living unfulfilled, broken, and powerless, remind yourself of the choice that was made—the conscious decision to make fear your god.

Living without stepping into the life God has for you is a conscious decision. You are choosing fear over faith, even if it is not acknowledged. Rejecting the life you were created for is not simply something that happens to you; it is something you decided on and allow.

If you have decided to give in to fear, I have prepared a prayer you can recite to demonstrate your devotion to it:

“Even though I want God’s best for my life, and even though the power of God is more than enough to get me where I need to be, I am choosing to obey you instead of obeying God. Fear, thank you for keeping me in bondage, affliction, and powerlessness, thereby preventing me from experiencing the greatness that God is working in my life. I also thank you for bringing all the other evils that accompany you. I thank you that I will spend all the days of my life experiencing the joy of mediocrity. Amen.”

Rather than giving fear authority over your life, take a moment to reflect honestly on what fear has cost you—and choose differently going forward.

Fight for Your Well-Being

(1) Have you asked God what He desires for you? (Create a journal entry to record God’s answer)

(2) Write down the most pressing reasons you have not taken steps toward the life God has for you.

(3) What are two things you can do today to move closer to where you want to be in the days ahead? (Hint: the first should be establishing a consistent prayer life.)

Paralyzed by Fear

The fear you experience when triggered by certain emotions is real and not merely in your mind. Intense fear can disrupt a person’s fight-or-flight response in critical situations, impairing their ability to activate natural self-preservation instincts.

If you find yourself constantly thinking about all the things you could do if only X, Y, and Z were different, you may unknowingly be held back by fear.

You are hindered from taking the necessary actions to make your life what you want it to be. The same fear that can give you the strength to run faster than Usain Bolt in the face of danger can both empower and paralyze you—making you comfortable in mediocrity, even when you know God is calling you to move forward to higher ground.

Imagine this: you check the balance of your bank account and discover that, for the past month, someone has been stealing from you every single day. Do you continue to allow the thief to carry out a daily assault on your finances, or do you take action and inform the bank so they can respond appropriately? Do you allow the fear and frustration over your stolen money to cripple your ability to act and take the necessary steps? No, you do not.

Yet in life, the enemy can carry out a daily assault on our minds, hearts, and circumstances, and we often respond as if we are powerless—doing nothing, and at worst, not even praying.

The Decision That Shapes Your Future

Responding to this crippling fear by doing nothing may seem like a temporary solution, but it will not fulfill the desire in your heart to grow and become greater than you are today.

Over time, unfulfilled desires can diminish your quality of life until you become so dissatisfied that you no longer enjoy the small blessings and comforts you once valued and were grateful for.

We do not often respond appropriately to missing out on God’s best for our lives because we have become conditioned to settle for less than His best. As the losses we experience accumulate, our minds adapt to accepting less. As a result, the emotional impact becomes less intense over time.

The point at which we fail to take action and begin our journey toward the promised land because of the obstacles we imagine is the point where fear becomes our god.

By obeying fear instead of obeying God and refusing to step out of our comfort zone, we are essentially declaring that fear has control over our lives and will continue to do so for the foreseeable future. Fear begins to govern us when we do not take the necessary steps to move forward and push beyond what we are afraid of. (Exodus 3)

I do not believe that most people who love God would knowingly and intentionally disobey Him, especially when He is leading them toward their promised land—a place where the desires of their heart are fulfilled. Rather, it is often the fear of the unknown that holds them back from moving forward and experiencing the life God has prepared in Christ. Even though we may not always be able to predict or see the future, we can trust that God will never lead us into a ditch.

Just as we make a conscious (or passive) decision to live powerless in mediocrity, we can also make a conscious decision to live a Christ-like life filled with courage and grit.

Our decisions determine our joy. While it may be painful to develop new habits and maintain them over time, the pain of the alternative is even greater.

When you decide to live a life of flourishing fulfillment, you must first believe that God is able to transform you from fear into courage. This is not something you accomplish in your own strength; it is a work He has already made provision for. Scripture is filled with guidance on how to walk in faith, renew your mind, and move forward despite fear.

The real question becomes: how do you begin, and where do you find the instructions God has already given? The answer is found in His Word—through prayer, obedience, and steady trust in His promises. As you take each step in faith, God strengthens you, redirects your thoughts, and equips you to walk in the purpose He has prepared for you.

What’s helpful is that we have extracted these instructions so you can easily read and follow them directly in your Bible, step by step, without confusion or guesswork.

Continue to part 2…. Even when you don’t know every detail of the future, there’s a sense of ease when your days fall into rhythm. You get used to your routine, you recognize the progress you’re making, and you can even imagine the next steps. You move forward with confidence because, for once, the pieces seem to be falling into place.

And after working so hard—after enduring the criticism, the doubt, and the words of those who said you would never make it—you feel you’ve earned the right to finally rest. You’ve proven yourself. You’ve carried the weight. And now, with the fruit of your labor in front of you, it makes sense to expect peace.

You know deep down that God created you for His purpose. Rather than being passive, you’ve chosen to step into that purpose—you’ve nurtured relationships, poured your energy into the work He gave you, spoken life over people who crossed your path, and lived with intention, not just letting life pass you by.

Subscribe now

Enjoying the Sweet Fruits of Your Labor

Picture yourself walking through a garden you’ve poured everything into. The fragrance of roses and daisies greets you before you’ve even taken a step inside. The mangoes and pineapples you tended are ripe and sweet to the taste. A stream trickles nearby, its sound almost like a song, while the sunset paints the sky in soft oranges and purples. Every detail around you testifies to the effort you’ve put in.

In that moment, a deep satisfaction swells inside you. You whisper to yourself, “Finally, things are starting to come together.” After years of hard work—after giving your time, your finances, your energy, and even your tears—you can look at what you’ve built and say with certainty that it was worth it.

And it’s only natural to have expectations after investing so much. You don’t plant without hoping to see fruit. You don’t labor without anticipating results. To expect anything less would be unusual.

When the Garden Begins to Change

At first, the garden continues to thrive. The more it grows, the more responsibility you feel. You work harder because you believe it deserves your best. You put in longer hours, sacrifice more, and invest again, trusting that your garden will repay your effort.

But then, almost without notice, something shifts. You begin to see weeds sprouting here and there. At first, they seem harmless—easy to ignore. You tell yourself, “I’ll deal with them later.” But before long, they spread, and their presence can’t be overlooked.

You throw yourself into the work, but something strange happens—your increased effort doesn’t produce better results. No matter how hard you push, the flowers lose their scent. The fruit loses its sweetness. The birds that once filled the garden with song grow quiet. It feels as though the life of your garden is slowly slipping away, even as you invest more effort.

Confused, you start asking questions: “What am I doing wrong? Am I missing something? What do I need to change?”

When God Seems Silent

With no answers, you turn to God. You pray. You wait. You ask Him to show you what’s happening. But the silence lingers. Days pass, then weeks, yet you feel no response.

Then, one morning, you wake to the smell of smoke. The faint scent grows stronger until you’re running toward it with rising alarm. Your heart pounds and your mind races as you move closer. And there it is—the unthinkable. Much of your garden is ablaze. Flames consume the very trees you’ve cared for, and the rest are smoldering, barely standing.

Shock grips you. You can hardly process what your eyes are seeing. You reach out, desperate to salvage something, but it’s too late. The heat drives you back. You stand there, helpless, watching years of effort vanish in moments.

And as if that weren’t enough, you see the animals—creatures you nurtured, the ones that relied on you—stampeding in fear. In their desperate attempt to escape, they trample over the food you once depended on. Yams, potatoes—the very nourishment of your soul and spirit—are crushed beneath their feet.

In that moment, despair takes root. You’ve lost what you worked for, and now you feel unable to care for what depended on you.

How Could This Be?

The question rises like a scream inside you: “How could this possibly happen when I gave it everything I had? I did everything right. I worked hard, I prayed, I gave my best. Why, then, has it all fallen apart?”

The cruelest part isn’t even the loss—it’s the knowledge that you tried with everything in you. You wonder, “Would it have been easier if I hadn’t tried at all?”

You fall to the ground, your face turned toward heaven, but you can’t form words. The weight of grief is too heavy. Tears pour from your eyes as a silent cry escapes from your heart.

Time slows, and you feel trapped in the heaviness of it all. But just when the weight threatens to crush you, you feel droplets on your skin—rain falling gently from above. The fire begins to die down, slowly but surely. And with it, you sense something more—God’s presence surrounding you, not removing the pain but offering comfort in the middle of it.

You breathe—barely—as peace settles over you. Somehow, you manage to whisper, “Thank You, Lord.” You rise to your feet, weak but standing, staring at the remains of your once-beautiful garden. All your hard work went up in flames. All that remains is ashes and smoke.

When the Smoke Settles

As you walk through what’s left, the only thing that lingers is the smell of smoke. Every breath you take carries traces of it, as if the garden has entered your very chest. It stays there—impossible to remove—pressing against your heart with a weight you can’t ignore.

The longing to rebuild grows inside you. You want to make what you lost real again, but the question remains: How do I even begin to pick up the pieces?

A Naked Soul

It’s in moments like these that prayer becomes something more than words. The strongest prayers are the ones stripped of filters. When you let go of every mask, every attempt to sound strong or holy, and bring God your raw, unedited self—that’s when prayer truly begins.

Often, we think prayer is about forming sentences—telling God what we want, listing our worries, or presenting our plans. But in reality, prayer is the most honest, vulnerable conversation you’ll ever have with God.

And when your heart is too heavy to form words—when your only prayer is the silent question, “Why, God?”—that is the beginning of real prayer. That deep longing to hear God’s voice opens your mind and heart to receive a response.

Keeping the Heart Open

Think about it like this: you give your closest friend a gift you spent weeks making. It’s wrapped beautifully, tied with a ribbon, and full of meaning. But when you hand it over, they only admire the wrapping—maybe undo the ribbon—but never open the box. You’d be left asking, “Why don’t you want to see what I gave you?”

That’s what it’s like when we come to God but keep parts of our heart locked away. We let Him see the surface, but we hesitate to reveal what’s inside. Yet God is the One who gave the gift of life—the One who longs for the fullness of who you are. God wants you to come to Him, fully open, allowing Him to see and receive every part of you.

When you finally reach the point where all the layers fall off—when you’re too broken to hide, too tired to pretend—that’s when your prayer becomes real. That’s when God meets you, heart to heart.

Our Heartfelt Prayers Are Never in Vain

When your heart cries out in its most vulnerable state, God listens with a closeness you can’t experience anywhere else:

“The LORD is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves those who have a crushed spirit.” —Psalm 34:18

Intimate time with God is required to draw closer to Him. Jesus said in Matthew 6:6:

“But you, when you pray, enter into your inner room… pray to your Father who is in secret.”

When you shut the door, you shut out distractions. You should not be afraid to express yourself, because it is just you and God in that secret place.

You are free to cry out to Him with all your heart. In doing so, you fulfill Deuteronomy 6:5:

“You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your might.”

Your pain and tears are not wasted. They rise to Him like incense. If you close yourself off, you limit the depth of relationship He offers. But if you open wide, you step into the truth of James 4:8:

“Draw near to God, and He will draw near to you.”

When the heart is broken and the soul groans, God leans in. He hears even the prayers without words. Romans 8:26 reminds us:

“The Spirit Himself makes intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered.”

These are the moments when deep calls to deep (Psalm 42:7).

Daily Meditation

Even if your garden has burned to the ground—if all you see are ashes and smoke—remember this: God created your garden from nothing in the first place. And if He did it once, He can do it again.

But consider this—maybe what looks like the end is actually the beginning of something different. Something smaller. Simpler. But far more powerful.

What if all God is waiting for is not the strength of your hands or the wealth of your resources, but the smallest spark of faith planted deep within your heart?

The question remains: will you trust Him enough to plant again—even if all you have is a seed?

Question to Ponder Before Moving Ahead

Was Jesus telling the truth when He said:

“If you have faith as a grain of mustard seed… nothing will be impossible for you.” —Matthew 17:20
